Peer Success Story: Alex Julius

Let’s say you’re a high school or college student with a love of the outdoors and a budding interest in the tree care industry. How do you decide if this is the right career path for you? A great way to test the waters is to immerse yourself in everything tree care-related during Student Career Days (SCD) at TCI EXPO.

Meet Alex Julius.

Alex is an alumnus of SCD; she participated in Pittsburgh in 2010 and Hartford in 2011. Her discovery of the industry was by chance, but we already mentioned how she ended up in the industry.

This work study led to the opportunity to be a participant and compete at Student Career Days. Since then, Alex has been involved in the industry in several different roles. She entered the industry by completing arboricultural internships and worked as a tree trimmer for a company in California. She even obtained TCIA’s Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) credential. Today, Julius is the associate director of educational goods & services for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

Since she has first-hand experience with being a Student Career Days participant, we asked Alex for advice on how students can stand out to prospective employers. “What I’ve experienced is you don’t need to be the best, or the fastest, or the smartest. If you have the passion and aptitude to grow into a position, you will succeed,” says Alex. “Surround yourself with good people, stay passionate, and people will notice.”

Many past SCD participants have moved on to successful careers in arboriculture, including those who work with organizations dedicated to supporting the arboricultural industry, like Alex Julius! The team at SCD encourages you to meet as many people at TCI EXPO as possible to make valuable connections in the industry. You never know… the next hand you shake could belong to your future employer!

This year’s Student Career Days event will take place Thursday, November 2, through Saturday, November 4, 2017, in Columbus, Ohio (during TCI EXPO).
