Vertical Rope Ascent

Reach new challenges and heights at SCD’s newest event, the Vertical Rope Ascent!

What is it?

This event measures the competitor’s ability to perform a vertical ascent on a standing line:

  • using the footlock rope-climbing method on a doubled climbing line using a Prusik hitch or other approved friction hitch or device for fall protection; or
  • using SRT techniques and equipment of their choosing on a single line.

This is a timed event with a limit of 60 seconds. The fastest male and female competitors win a grand prize from STIHL.

What are the requirements?

Each competitor must:

  • use an approved climbing-style helmet.
  • use approved Prusik loop or mechanical device(s).
  • use an approved tree-climbing harness with a full body harness worn over it or fall-arrest harness with a dorsal attachment.
  • use the installed lines provided for the event.
  • wear approved eye protection.
  • wear work-appropriate clothing and footwear.

Before climbing, competitors must perform an “on-rope rest” to demonstrate the effectiveness and adjustment of the fall-arrest safety equipment.

What are the rules?

The height is approximately 25 ft. for both men and women competitors. The finishing bell will be installed approximately 15 inches horizontally from the competitor’s line.

The timers start their stopwatches when the competitor’s second foot leaves the ground and stop when the competitor rings the bell, either by hitting or shaking it with his/her hand.

Competitors will be belayed and lowered by an impartial belayer with a separate line.

If a competitor does not reach the bell/buzzer within the 60-second time limit or engages in some practice the judge or belayer deems unsafe, the judge will instruct the competitor to stop and descend to the ground. The competitor will receive no score (time) in situations such as but not limited to the following:

  • During the ascent, the competitor places his/her hand on or above the friction hitch, or otherwise disables the friction hitch or device.
  • Interferes with or attempts to disable the belay.
  • Shows signs they are demonstrably struggling and beyond their skill level.
  • Runs out of time.

If a valid scoring time cannot be confirmed, the competitor shall be offered the opportunity to re-run the event at a later time.
