Chelsi Abbott received her master’s in Plant Pathology from Purdue University and a bachelor’s in Biological Sciences from Central Michigan University. In her current role, she is a scientific advisor and education specialist at the Davey Institute offices in the Great Lakes regions of the United States and Eastern Canada. She supports the offices in diagnostics, pathology, entomology, and soil care topics. She also conducts research in these areas and frequently engages in educational outreach, and arboriculture curriculum building and presents at industry conferences.
Joe Aiken, Regional Technical Manager for the Great Lakes region, has 35-plus years of experience in the tree care industry. Aiken has worked in all phases of tree care, both as a licensed applicator and an ISA-certified arborist. He routinely conducts product seminars and presentations on various arboriculture topics, which are attended by arborists, city foresters, plant health care technicians, master gardeners, university extension agents, grounds departments, and research personnel. He shares the belief and goal of tree preservation and the importance of educating others on the benefit of environmentally sustainable solutions for maintaining and caring for the world’s urban forests. He is a founding member of the Arboriculture Society of the Michigan Foundation and Curator of the Arboriculture Historical Society, helping spearhead the first-ever Arboriculture Museum in Detroit, Michigan on Belle Isle State Park. He also serves as the committee chair for the Michigan Tree Climbing Championship and works with the ISA International Historic Committee helping share 100 years of Arboriculture with the world.
Craig Bachmann is the lead arborist & manager of Tree133 in Seattle, Washington. He is a Certified Arborist / TRAQ, Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP), and an experienced skills trainer. Craig is also a head judge and technician for the International Tree Climbing Championship. He regularly speaks at conferences and has been published in Arborist News and TCIA Magazine.
John Ball is a Professor of Forestry at South Dakota State University where he instructs courses in arboriculture and forestry. He also teachers courses in rock climbing and emergency medical services. He also serves as an arborist for the campus and the arboretum.
Nicole “carni” Benjamin is an ISA Certified Arborist, she was lucky enough to get started in the industry with Heartwood Tree Service, setting her up with a steep learning curve and experience in a broad range of production tree work. In 2018 she and her husband ventured out as subcontractors; working on various projects ranging from line clearance/utility work to residential removals & pruning, mass municipal removal projects, to zipline and treehouse builds. Throughout her career she has been the groundie, (contract) climber, crew leader, general foreman, owner, chief safety officer, the list continures; despite those roles not always getting along, she’s found necessity and respect are deserved for all of them. She currently resides outside Charlotte with her husband, daughter and neurotic bluetick coonhound. They often travel around the continental USA to attend tree climbing competitions, conferences, visit & work with friends, assist with the Women’s Tree Climbing Workshop and other tree work related training & workshops. Her favorite tree changes regularly, but she is always grateful for Charlotte’s massive Willow Oaks – Quercus phellos, and Tulip Poplars – Liriodendron tulipifera.
Certified arborist, CTSP, bachelor’s degree in business marketing, 17 years of experience in the tree care industry, 12 years of which are owning and operating a tree care business.
Megan is an enthusiastic 20-year industry professional technical trainer, ISA Certified Arborist, TCIA Certified Tree Care Professional, and SPRAT lvl 1 Rope Technician, to name a few of the qualifications she currently obtains, as well as both an Associate’s Degree in Forest Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. She has worked for industry-leading companies such as Husqvarna, Wright Tree Service, and SAI Communications before moving on to train independently at her company Upward Training & Development LLC.
Tim has been an ISA Certified Arborist since 1992 and a TCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP) since 2009. He chaired the ANSI A300 Committee and participated as a voting member in current and previous ANSI Z133 revisions. Tim was a head technician from 2005-2011 for ISA’s International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC). Certified by Petzl America as a Competent Person regarding Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), he is also a competent person in climbing/ rigging gear inspections to the United Kingdom standards (LOLER). Tim is a SPRAT Level 1 Technician. Tim has received the TCIA Pat Felix Volunteer of the Year Award.
He is a licensed tree expert with the state of New Jersey, an ISA Certified Arborist, and a TCIA Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP). Mark is also a spokesperson for STIHL Inc, Teufelberger Fiber Rope Corporation and Kask Safety.
Ash Connelly began her professional career in the legal field as a degree holding Paralegal for 12 years. Native to South Carolina, with an eye for details and a desire to be outdoors, she daringly pursued a career change to arboriculture in January 2020. An analytical skill set a decade in the making translated well and has equipped Ash in forwarding the importance of professionalism in the industry. Ash believes communication and education are key to striking a balance between client wants and tree needs. As the Vice President of Charleston Tree Experts, Ash has instilled personal and professional development in her team members. She developed and oversaw the initiatives that doubled the company size and tripled gross revenue in 2 years. She has pursued opportunities to both build community relationships and further educate the greater Charleston area about the value of the living assets in our fractured urban forest. Her drive to make a difference and raise industry standards are seen in the effort she puts forth in micro and macro ways.
By speaking at local committee meetings, presenting to various grade levels and assisting in hosting tree care workshops, among other efforts, Ash strives to broaden common knowledge on proper tree care and serve her community. She is an ISA Certified Arborist, a Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) member and presently certified as a TCIA Grounds Operations Specialist, TCIA Chipper Operations Specialist as well as a TCIA Treecare Apprentice. To expand her arboricultural understanding and practices, she routinely attends industry workshops and conferences, including the TCIA Executive Arborist Workshop, TCI Expo, ISA Annual Conference, American Society of Arboriculture (ASCA) Annual Conference, TCIA Winter Management Conference, as well as local workshops.
Korey Conry is a Field Safety Supervisor/Trainer at Mountain F Enterprises and has been in the tree industry for over four years. He found his home in the Safety department, training, onboarding, and helping develop the safety culture with new hires. He is a certified arborist through the ISA, California Flagger instructor, CPR instructor, TCIA instructor and OSHA Authorized Trainer. Korey has since November 2020 has been a lead instructor of a 5-week utility line clearance arborist class through Butte college. Korey has worked in wildland firefighting and as an emergency room technician and a love for the outdoors. When he is not working, you can find him sitting under a Blue Oak in northern California turkey hunting or watching Star Wars/Harry Potter with his family on movie night.
Heather is the Vice President of Operations at SingleOps and was brought on board for her experience leading cross-functional teams in the green industry during periods of accelerated growth. Although her focus is overall operational process improvements to drive efficiency and productivity, her initial focus at SingleOps is implementation and serving as the voice of the customer in product development.
Katie Fleming is the Senior Forestry Program Manager at Openlands. Katie works with Arborist Apprentices, Openlands Forestry staff, and partners to oversee the first year of the Arborist Registered Apprenticeship while also supporting and developing the second and third years of the program. Katie provides related instruction and classroom training to apprentices, leads field staff in accomplishing tree establishment maintenance and planting projects, and educates volunteers, community members, and apprentices on the importance of Chicago’s urban canopy. Prior to managing the Arborist Registered Apprenticeship, Katie joined Openlands in 2018 as the Forestry Crew Leader and established and implemented the Forestry Training Program. Katie is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist (IL-9691A) and an Openlands TreeKeeper. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources & Environmental Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
A highly skilled arborist and climber, Karsten is a Marine Corps veteran and a native of Indiana. He is a Certified Arborist and ISA Qualified Tree Risk Assessor. Karsten is also a very accomplished mountaineer. His proven technical expertise and leadership abilities are great assets to their team.
Josiah Georgeson is the owner of Strider Trees. Best known for his short, practical tree-work-related videos on the educational Youtube channel @stridertrees, he was also the owner/operator of a residential tree service in Northern California and recently relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, becoming the Work Safety Territory Manager for Edelrid North America. As a self-taught arborist, he is passionate about getting good information into the hands of any who would use it.
Kathy worked at Chester Valley Golf Club, Pennsylvania on the grounds crew for the Senior PGA Tour Course; was the owner of Blackforest Landscaping, sales branch manager at LESCO, Inc., general manager of Tri-State Turf Supply, LLC, director of renewable services of Monster Franchising, and a consultant for turf and ornamental training programs at Inspire Green, Inc.
She was also a PA Pesticide Applicator License in several categories, held a Pesticide and Seed Dealer License in PA, MD, and DE, and is a Certified Soil Microscopy Technician. Kathy is also an ISA Certified Arborist.
Fredric R. Haskett CA, CTP, LICM
Fred has been in the Green Industry for 48 years. He has been an executive with Brickman, Valley Crest, and U S Lawns. Fred has directly managed the sales and production of over $315 million in lawn care, tree care and landscape services. As Principle Partner with TrueWinds Consulting, he facilitates peer groups, & coaches LawnCare, Tree Care, and Landscape companies. Fred is a Landscape Industry Certified Manager, a Certified Turf Grass Professional and a Certified Arborist. He serves on the Board of Project Evergreen & Government Affairs Council for NALP. Fred is also, a NALP TRAILBLAZER and has had extensive experience in several areas of the “Green Industry” including Lawn and Tree Care Landscape Management, Design Build, Arbor Care, Water Management, and Snow and Ice Removal.
Bill Hickman is the Director of Training & Development and a Territory manager for Heartwood Tree Service in Charlotte, NC. He has 23 years of experience in arboriculture. He has a B.S. degree in Environmental Science with a minor in Geology. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Care Safety Professional (CTSP), TCIA Qualified Trainer, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and a contributor to TCI Magazine.
In the last several years, his efforts have extended into the training sector in the hopes that his studies and field experiences can benefit other budding arborists and small companies. Through opportunities at Heartwood, he, along with many other team members, created Heartwood University and established an apprenticeship program. He is passionate about educating the next generation of arborists and is often referred to as the “Professor.” He contributes much of his own success to sharing the values and mission of Heartwood, and the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of giants.
I started in this industry in 2019. I spent my first year working on myself and obtaining my credentials. I have always been passionate about paving a better way for the next generation. I started training and mentoring right away and even helped start an event at Davey Tree for women and gender expansive arborists within the company. We are planning our third annual event now. I try to be active in the industry outside of Davey as well by volunteering my time with the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture, Legends of the Geezers, and some local events as well. If I am not at work, I am usually hanging out with my four-year-old English Springer, River. I still have a long road in the industry, but I am excited for the journey.
Jeff Inman is a thinker, an arborist, and a climber to his core. More importantly, he is husband to Kelsey and father to Cedar and Lucille. He works for Truetimber Arborists based out of Richmond, Virginia, as the Risk Manager and Truetimber Academy Director. Jeff’s passion for tree climbing has allowed for a wild ride over the last decade. He has been making sawdust professionally since 2011 but discovered tree climbing competitions in 2013, which triggered a real passion to combine technical climbing with his quiet yet competitive nature. He holds various certifications through the ISA and TCIA, most notably Climber Specialist, Certified Arborist, TRAQ, and Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP). His passion in this industry has always been centered around climbing, learning, teaching, and growth.
David is originally from Pittsburgh, PA, and is a 2003 graduate of Penn State University. He is currently a Captain with the Columbus Division of Fire at Station 16 and Co-Owner of Joseph Tree, a TCIA Accredited company, with his brother Michael. David is also an EMT-Paramedic, ISA-Certified Arborist and State of Ohio Certified Applicator.
Alex is the employee development and safety training specialist at the Davey Tree Expert Company. She is a Board-Certified Master Arborist, Certified Tree Worker Climber Specialist, and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Alex earned her Master’s in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry from UMass, Amherst. She is a co-author of the Tree Climbers’ Guide. She is based in Urbana, Illinois.

He now serves as the Growth Leader and ‘Into The Storm’ Coach for an EOS firm in Cleveland, OH called CultureShoc, where he works with clients all over the US to identify and develop their next-gen executives and to differentiate themselves from the competition through stronger culture.

Dr. Robert J. Laverne is the Manager of Education & Training for the Davey Tree Expert Company. He is a Board Certified Master Arborist, Registered Consulting Arborist, and is an instructor for the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Program (TRAQ), the Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualification program (TPAQ), and teaches the Urban Forestry and Arboriculture classes at Michigan Technological University.
Brian has over 17 years in successfully marketing small-to-medium size businesses from coast to coast. Through developing relationships with local businesses, Brian realized that most business owners were overwhelmed and unsure of how to handle their digital marketing efforts. Korey Lofy, co-host and producer of Discovering Forestry, is the Rocky Mountain Territory Manager and helps tree care companies and municipalities in the Rocky Mountain region grow their plant health care programs. “We started the podcast with the goal of educating people about the importance of preserving trees, and it has grown into so much more than we ever imagined! We’re helping our listeners discover new trends in the industry and guiding tree and plant care professionals on how to grow their business, and we’re really having a lot of fun doing it,” says Lofy, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with a B.S. Urban Forestry, Forest Recreation, and Interpersonal Communication. He is an ISA Certified Arborist with a pesticide applicator’s license in four states and is the ISA’s Rocky Mountain Chapter’s 2021 Arborist of the Year.
Matt is an accomplished arborist, hazard faller, and timber faller. In the summer months, he works with the Wildland firefighters to remove hazardous trees. Layered, by outdoor adventures, outdoors, and lifestyle subjects, Matt is known throughout the arborist community. His drive and work ethic have allowed him to expand his types of tree removal work throughout the industry. At the age of 32, Matt has established himself as an influencer within his field.
After graduating from Paul Smith’s College, where he explored forestry and studied urban tree management (UTM), Mark started his own business, ALLMARK Tree and Crane Service.
Not only is Mark a business owner, former Boy Scout of America, NJ Crane Expert trainer and certified arborist. He enjoys ice climbing, and he’s a two-time NYSA Tree Climbing Champion who has also competed internationally three times.
Well respected within the industry, Mark has given numerous presentations, including one for the Florida Arborist Association. He loves the opportunity to train because he enjoys interacting with like-minded professionals, seeing fresh perspectives, and usually finds that he learns something new from each training session as well. His mission in training is to help others become better, faster, safer, and avoid some of the on-the-job injuries he has suffered.

After graduating with a Forestry degree from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2003 and working as an arborist for a parks department, Eric joined his family’s insurance agency and began helping tree care companies grow and properly protect themselves. Seeing a need for a more specialized approach for the tree care industry, Eric and his team created the ArboRisk program around two basic principles: 1. To help every arborist get home safe each night. 2. To help tree care companies grow and professionalize. Eric is a past president and recipient of the Richard Rideout Distinguished Service Award of the Wisconsin Arborist Association as well as a member of ISA, TCIA and multiple ISA chapters.
Caitlyn Pollihan is CEO and Executive Director for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). She began her role as Executive Director in 2017, with the Board adding the CEO title in 2020 to better reflect Caitlyn’s leadership responsibilities. During her tenure, Caitlyn has successfully led the organization’s relocation to Atlanta, GA US, initiated the modernization of ISA systems and operations, and has increased the global connectivity and accessibility of the association.
Caitlyn participates in several coalitions and committees, such as the Sustainable Urban Forestry Coalition Steering Committee, the i-Tree Executive Committee, and previously served on numerous public policy committees and was an appointed member of the National Advisory Committee for Implementation of the National Forest System Land Management Planning Rule.
Caitlyn holds a bachelor’s degree in contemporary media and journalism/public relations from the University of South Dakota and a master’s degree in organizational communication from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has a Certificate in Nonprofit Organization Management from the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Institute for Organization Management and has earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential, the highest professional credential in the association industry.
Lindsey Purcell is a principal consultant in the arboricultural consulting business. His educational background includes an AS degree from Vincennes University, a BS degree from Purdue University, and an M.Ed. degree from Indiana State University. Lindsey serves as Executive Director of the Indiana Arborist Association. He is a senior member of Lp Consulting Group and offers expertise, resources, and guidance to help tree care businesses succeed in their industry. He is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, and an American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) Registered Consulting Arborist.
Mike is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland. His degrees include a BS and MS from Rutgers University and a PH.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. He has worked closely with the arboricultural industry for more than 40 years and received a dozen international, national, and regional awards for writing, scholarship, and scientific outreach. Mike is a regular expert guest on television and radio. Rudy is an ISA Certified Arborist with an affinity for helping customers and their problems. His career began after graduating with dual degrees from Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources. He then worked for Bartlett Tree Experts as a groundsperson, climber, plant health care technician, and Arborist Representative. He currently is Petzl’s National Sales Manager and resident arborist. Rudy is Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, and has held numerous qualifications such as SPRAT Level 1 Rope Access Technician, Certified Treecare Safety Professional, Tower Telecommunication Technician, and Qualified Applicator. When not working, Rudy is skiing, running, cooking, or playing with his border collie.
Luke is an Arborist Technician Instructor at Mid-State Technical College in Central Wisconsin. He has over ten years of experience in the green industry, in addition to degrees in Urban Forestry and Soil Science from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. His passion is taking care of trees and that starts with healthy soil!
Lawrence has been involved in tree care since the fall of 2003. Ten years of his career were spent in New York City, working for the Brooklyn Forestry Department and later for Central Park. He has been residing in California as a full-time contract climbing arborist since 2015. In recent years his efforts have extended into the training sector in the hopes that his studies and field experiences can benefit other budding arborists.
Zack Shier was born and raised in Marysville, OH. After high school, Zack spent four years in the U.S. Army stationed in Savannah, GA, with 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. After the Army, Zack attended The Ohio State University majoring in forestry. During his tenure at OSU, Zack began working at Joseph Tree as a groundsman, climber, and equipment operator. Zack eventually started building the PHC section for the company and took over its management. He currently resides in Marysville, OH with his wife, Rachel, and their son, Oliver.
Assuming responsibility for recruitment across the Midwest and Western regions. With a career spanning over two decades in the Green Industry, Cindy’s expertise encompasses diverse roles including fieldwork, sales arborist responsibilities, as well as management of both field and office teams.
She has a bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point in both Urban Forestry and Parks & Recreation, an M.B.A. from National Lewis University, Certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from The Ohio State University. She is an ISA Certified Arborist, has her SHRM Senior Certified Professional and is a Certified Diversity Executive (CDE).
Mark Synnott is a New York Times bestselling author, a pioneering big wall climber, and one of the most prolific adventurers of his generation. Hans is a tech-savvy graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University and a licensed tree expert who holds over 20+ years of professional experience. Not only did Hans found NJ Crane Expert, but he serves as the company’s lead crane instructor for their NCCER crane certification classes. Ever the Tree Tactician, Hans is adept at planning and executing tree removal projects in high-risk environments and now enjoys sharing his experiences and knowledge with his students. He is a passionate educator who works with his crew to promote and teach safe practices and effective techniques for arborists’ many high-risk responsibilities by using modern equipment matched with comprehensive strategy.

Mike Tilford is director of Tree Care at Savatree and is an ISA Certified Tree Worker, Certified Arborist, Certified Municipal Specialist, Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP), a past presenter for TCIA, Head Judge for AR at ITCC, presenter at regional conferences, trainer at regional events, and a voting member of Z133 committee.
Megan Townsend is COO and Co-Founder of Altitude Arborist in Broomfield, CO. Megan and her husband, Hunter, started Altitude Arborist in 2016 and have experienced at least 25% growth each year with a 72% increase in 2021, the year Megan left her career as a dermatology PA behind to go all-in with Altitude Arborist. Megan delights in sharing her business knowledge and passion with others and comes from a long line of successful entrepreneurs. She is deeply involved in the industry, serving as chair of the leadership team for the Colorado Tree Care Sector Partnership and recently serving on the TCIA Dues Taskforce, among other volunteer roles. Megan’s speaking experience includes national conferences, university classes, community and business events. Tim is working on his doctorate in ergonomics and safety. His research looks at risk in the tree care profession. He has a Master’s degree in ergonomics from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He has Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Urban Forestry from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
He is a Certified Treecare Safety Professional. He is an ISA Certified Arborist and Tree Worker, New Hampshire certified arborist, and a Maine licensed arborist. He has been a voting member of the Accredited Standards Committee Z133 for several revisions, is a task chair, and is still actively involved in several Task Groups, including; electrical hazards, rigging, crane use, chain saws, chippers and, and others. David is the President & CEO of the Tree Care Industry Association, a national trade group focused on advancing tree care businesses. He is passionate about helping organizations succeed and believes that a shared vision and positive culture are critical to achieving that success.
In addition to TCIA, David has also held leadership positions at the Northeast Public Power Association and Massachusetts Dental Society and is a former member of the New England Society of Association Executives Board of Directors. He earned his Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees from Suffolk University and is a Certified Association Executive.
