| Saturday | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM | ANSI Z-133 – 2026 and the Unequal Application of 29 CFR 1910.269 |
Tim Walsh, CTSP, The Townsend Company Utility line workers and line clearance arborists often work side-by-side in the same environment, around the same electrical infrastructure, under the same OSHA standard, 29 CFR 1910.269. Yet the regulatory requirements, work methods, qualifications, personal protective equipment, and operational expectations can differ significantly between the two professions. Misunderstanding these distinctions can create compliance challenges, operational inefficiencies, and increased exposure to serious injury and fatality risks. This session explores the relationship between OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269 and the ANSI Z133 -2026 Arboricultural Operations Safety Standard, providing attendees with a practical understanding of where the requirements align, where they differ, and why those differences exist. Particular emphasis will be placed on the application of electrical hazard requirements, employee qualification systems, minimum approach distances, insulated tools and equipment, personal protective equipment, aerial operations, emergency preparedness, and work practices unique to line clearance tree trimming operations. Attendees will also receive an overview of the most significant changes incorporated into ANSI Z133 - 2026, including the new four-level electrical arborist qualification framework, updated electrical safety provisions, revised terminology, and expanded requirements affecting field operations. Through practical examples and field-based discussion, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how utility arborists and utility line workers operate under the same regulatory framework while performing fundamentally different work. Whether you are a utility arborist, vegetation management professional, utility safety leader, operations manager, contractor administrator, or line worker, this session will provide actionable guidance for improving compliance, strengthening qualification programs, and ensuring that work practices accurately reflect both regulatory requirements and operational realities. | View | Advanced Level, Safety | 1 ISA CEUs | Main Stage (Palm Ballroom) | 69 | saturday | advanced-level safety |

| 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM | Shin-Fu, Part Deux: What to Say When They Say “I’ll Think About It” |
Mike White, CTSP, TreemasterLLC You’ve given the price. The customer pauses. Then comes the phrase every arborist dreads: “I’ll think about it.” This session builds on the Shin-Fu pricing mindset by focusing on what happens next - the on-site conversation. This talk walks through a practical, ethical approach to customer consultations rooted in confidence, curiosity, and clarity. Drawing from real-world field experience, you’ll hear how to lead sales conversations as a professional arborist (not a car salesman), how to talk about money without discomfort, and how to respond calmly when customers hesitate. Mike will cover the right mental posture for sales, how to ask better questions, how to handle common objections, and how to work toward clear next steps without discounting, pressure, or awkward follow-ups. Sometimes that clarity leads to a yes. Sometimes it leads to a no. Either way, you’ll leave the conversation with professionalism, confidence - and your soul intact. If you’ve ever driven away from a consultation wishing you’d handled it better, this session is designed to help you do exactly that. | View | Foundational Level, Sales & Marketing | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Room Grand F/H | 06 | foundational-level sales-marketing | education-session
| 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM | A300: Stop Pruning Malpractice with Prescription |
Kristopher Rasmussen, CTSP, QT, Arborist Strong This session examines the ANSI A300–2023 pruning standards and their role as the foundation for work specifications, training programs, quality assurance protocols, and regulatory guidance for managing trees, shrubs, palms, and other woody landscape plants. Participants will learn the essential components required for pruning specifications to meet A300–2023 standards and why precise, objective-based language is critical to consistent and defensible tree care. It will explore industry Best Management Practices (BMPs) and the Prescriptive Pruning Qualification (PPQ) as practical tools for clearly defining how a tree, shrub, or palm is to be pruned. Emphasis is placed on developing effective pruning prescriptions that begin with understanding the client’s concerns and the plant’s condition, then assigning clear, measurable objectives that directly address those concerns. Participants will gain insight into how well-written pruning prescriptions - those that specify which branches are to be pruned, the number of cuts, maximum cut size, and exact cut locations - improve communication among clients, sales arborists, and production arborists. While pruning objectives may differ between young, establishing trees and mature trees, the prescription-driven process remains consistent across all life stages. | View | Advanced Level, Training | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Room Floridian B/C | 07 | advanced-level training | education-session

| 8:45 AM - 9:45 AM | There’s No Such Thing as a Safety Problem |
Haley Vincent and David Vincent, CTSP, QT, Guardian Group Safety & Leadership Solutions What if your "safety problem" isn't actually a safety problem? In this session, Haley and Dave from Guardian Group Safety & Leadership Solutions challenge one of the industry's most misdiagnosed issues: incidents aren't "safety problems," they're operational problems with unsafe results. Drawing on Safety II philosophy and their own experience in both safety and leadership in tree care and other high-risk industries, Haley and Dave make the case for what actually moves the needle on safety outcomes and why the answer looks a lot less like a safety initiative and a lot more like operational excellence. And because YOUR safety is worth talking about, we've intentionally extended the Q&A so attendees can interact directly with both a safety professional and an operations leader and get advice from both perspectives. Feel free to bring the questions you've been afraid to ask your boss. | View | Foundational Level, Safety | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Room Grand B/D | 09 | foundational-level safety | education-session
| 8:45 AM - 9:45 AM | From Crew to Company: How to Build a Tree Business That Scales |
Chase Kepley, Xylem-Kendall (XKIG) Most tree care companies reach a point where growth causes more issues than progress. Owners become a bottleneck, crews work inconsistently, and profitability becomes uncertain. This session explains how to shift from an owner-dependent operation to a scalable business built on structure, accountability, and repeatable systems. Attendees will learn how to recognize when growth is harming their business, build effective middle-management layers, and standardize operations without sacrificing quality or culture. We’ll also examine the key performance indicators that influence decisions both in the field and in the office. Through real-world examples and practical frameworks, this session provides business owners and leaders with the essential tools to grow sustainably, boost crew performance, and build a company that doesn’t depend on one person to hold it all together. | View | Business Strategy, Foundational Level | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Grand E/G | 10 | business-strategy foundational-level | education-session

| 12:30 PM - 1:15 PM | Feel the Forces: Rigging Fundamentals – Part 1 |
Emmett Shutts, CTSP and Corey Shepard, CTSP, The Davey Tree Expert Company Feel the Forces takes a practical, hands-on approach to illustrating the forces placed on a tree during rigging and climbing operations. The first session explores concepts such as force amplification, bending, and forces generated by deviations through interactive demonstrations that introduce basic terms including mass, leverage, tension, compression, and bending. Using co-presenters and audience members as “trees,” presenters demonstrate how a suspended rope bag (mass) affects a platform, represented by a person, in various configurations. This approach helps attendees better understand how forces are transferred through tree parts by allowing participants to physically experience and describe the loads being applied. Presenters will demonstrate how trees have a greater capacity to resist failure when their parts are placed in compression, a concept referred to as rigging to advantage. This will be contrasted with scenarios that illustrate bending and leverage, known as rigging to disadvantage, helping attendees recognize how rigging choices can significantly affect the forces acting on a tree. | View | Foundational Level, Training | Education Session | TCI EXPOTree | 0.75 ISA & CTSP CEUs | Trade Show Floor #1436 | 21 | foundational-level training | education-session | tci-expotree |

| 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM | Tight Quarters Rigging |
Lawrence Schultz, Independent Trainer This session covers creative applications of rigging fundamentals, including the most basic “old school” techniques, in the most complex of situations. Rope has been the arborist’s first tool before there were any others. In matters of climbing and rigging, rope on rope and rope on wood was the standard. Time of course marches on as does technology. Ropes, just as the tools, are plentiful and varied. However, the merits of the tried-and-true old-school use of aerial friction are still applicable today. In this course, we shall look at creative applications of fundamental principles in tight quarter rigging situations, including aerial friction. Because it is the most demanding and technical type of work an arborist will encounter, it often requires all the tools and techniques we have at our disposal, even the “old school” ones. Lawrence will supplement his presentation with real-life examples from the field including a combination of job site pictures and video footage. | View | Advanced Level, Training | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Grand B/D | 34 | advanced-level training | education-session

Cyrus DeVere and Cheri Michaels, TreeServe, LLC In today's competitive tree care environment, small businesses face significant challenges in transitioning from founder-led to sustainable growth and scalable operations. While a variety of CRM tools and strategies play important roles, the foundation for long-term success often lies in implementing a Business Operating System (BOS) - a structured framework of processes, tools, accountability mechanisms, and decision-making protocols that aligns vision, mission, people, data, issues, processes, and execution. This presentation represents how a well-designed operating system - such as the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS®), replicating success, or custom BOS frameworks - transforms chaotic, founder-dependent small businesses into efficient, predictable organizations capable of growing and scaling. Key benefits include:
By adopting an intentional operating system, small tree care companies can shift from reactive firefighting to proactive leadership, unlocking predictable growth, higher profitability, and long-term value creation. | View | Business Strategy, Foundational Level | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Grand A/C | 38 | business-strategy foundational-level | education-session

| 8:45 AM - 9:45 AM | Tree Law 101: Avoiding Disputes, Liability, and Costly Mistakes | Sara Babcock, Esq., Xylem-Kendall (XKIG) Tree-related legal issues sit at the intersection of property rights, safety, and professional responsibility - and misunderstandings can quickly escalate into disputes, delays, or liability exposure. Tree Law 101 is designed to provide tree care professionals, utility contractors, and related stakeholders with a practical, real-world understanding of the legal frameworks that govern trees and property lines. This session will break down the core legal principles that apply across most jurisdictions, while highlighting where state-specific differences may significantly impact decision making. Attendees will gain clarity on key topics including: who owns a tree located on or near a property boundary; how “boundary trees” are defined and managed; the rights of property owners to trim encroaching limbs and roots; and the limits of those rights when such actions could harm the health or stability of a tree. The presentation will also address liability considerations - one of the most critical areas for contractors and property managers. Participants will explore how courts typically evaluate responsibility for fallen trees or limbs, including the distinction between “acts of nature” and negligence. Real-world examples will illustrate how factors such as visible defects, prior notice, and maintenance practices can influence legal outcomes. In addition, the session will cover practical risk-mitigation strategies that can be implemented immediately in the field and in business operations. This includes best practices for documenting site conditions, communicating with property owners, understanding easements and right-of-way considerations, and knowing when to seek legal guidance before proceeding with work. Rather than focusing on legal theory, this presentation emphasizes actionable knowledge. Attendees will leave with a stronger ability to recognize potential legal issues before they become problems, respond confidently to customer questions or concerns, and align their work practices with widely accepted legal standards. Whether you are managing crews, interacting directly with customers, or overseeing operations, Tree Law 101 will equip you with the foundational knowledge needed to navigate tree-related legal issues with greater confidence, professionalism, and reduced risk. | View | Advocacy & Regulatory Compliance, Foundational Level | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Floridian D | 41 | advocacy-regulatory-compliance foundational-level | education-session | ||

This two-part session is designed to help participants understand the principles behind selecting safe and effective primary suspension points for climbing and rigging operations. Part 1 is a classroom-style session that focuses on the fundamental concepts and theory, while Part 2 (Friday, 11/13 at 2:30pm) brings those concepts to life through a guided demonstration on a live tree located on the trade show floor. The objective is to help prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) caused by falls resulting from the failure of tie-in points (TIPs). Presenters will review the key principles that influence how loads interact with selected tie-in points and anchors, and how the forces generated by climbers and rigging systems affect tree structures. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the factors that should be considered when selecting what the presenters refer to as Primary Suspension Points. Participants will also be introduced to practical methods for estimating forces and peak loads generated during normal climbing operations, providing a foundation for the live demonstrations featured in Part 2. | View | Training | Education Session | TCIEXPOGrow | 0.5 ISA CEUs | Trade Show Floor #1901 | 49 | training | education-session | tciexpogrow |
| 11:30 AM - 12:15 PM | Feel the Forces: Force Amplification and Advanced Rigging – Part 2 | Emmett Shutts & Corey Shepard, The Davey Tree Expert Company This begins with a brief recap of Part 1, followed by a comparison of rigging to advantage versus rigging to disadvantage. Through hands-on demonstrations, presenters will use rope angles to illustrate how forces change and how certain rigging configurations can create force amplification, particularly when tree parts are subjected to bending. One example explores how moving an anchor point, such as a port-a-wrap, to an adjacent tree can create angles that increase stress on the rigged tree. The session will also examine how rope angles create vectors and influence loading. If the demonstration tree is suitable, presenters will show how rigging point selection can either bend or compress tree parts, using a plumb bob to visually compare branch deflection under different loading scenarios. The program concludes with an interactive positioning skyline exercise. Using fiberglass poles as trees, participants will experience how suspended loads create bending forces and how adjustments such as hold-back lines and wider rope angles can shift forces into compression, resulting in a more stable and efficient system. Includes time for Q&As. | View | Safety | Education Session | TCI EXPOTree | 0.75 ISA & CTSP CEUs | Trade Show Floor #1436 | 50 | safety | education-session | tci-expotree |

| 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM | Selling as a Consultant: Never be the Low Bidder |
David Anderson, CTSP, Mayer Tree Service How do you move beyond price-based sales and become the company clients want to hire for your quality and service? Too many tree care companies undervalue their work and bid too low out of fear of losing the job. But winning work that is not profitable can be worse than losing it. With a limited number of billable crew days each year, every job needs to support the business. This session will focus on how to position your company as the trusted expert, not the cheapest option. That requires a holistic approach: honest dealings, exceptional client service, strong plant-health knowledge, accurate pricing, well-trained staff and a clear understanding of costs and overhead. From the person answering the phone to the newest crew member, everyone should support the same goal: building a company known for professionalism and integrity. The strongest companies are not known for being cheap. They are known for expertise, service, consistency and trust. Your tree care company may not be Lexus, Four Seasons or L.L.Bean, but you can learn from how those companies build value – and make sure low bids are not what define your business. | View | Advanced Level, Sales & Marketing | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | 303AB | 62 | advanced-level sales-marketing | education-session

| 4:15 PM - 5:15 PM | From Training to Safe Work: Closing the Gap |
Erick Navarro Palacios, International Arborist Institute and Emiliano Jimenez-Cornejo, Soligo, LLC Tree care companies rely on training to build safe crews, strengthen technical skills, and support consistent field performance. But formal instruction alone does not guarantee that critical knowledge stays active on the job site. In many operations, the real challenge begins after onboarding, certification, and refresher training ends. This session examines the gap between training and safe work in real field conditions. Presenters will explore why knowledge often breaks down between formal instruction and daily application, especially in high-risk environments where crews must make quick decisions, communicate clearly, and apply standards consistently. The session will also address a common industry reality: mixed-language crews and limited bilingual supervision can make reinforcement, clarification, and hazard communication more difficult when it matters most. Using examples from tree care operations, the session will highlight common points where training loses momentum, including tailgate meeting consistency, aerial rescue procedure review, chain saw and rigging practices, equipment inspection and maintenance checks, crew leader communication and decision-making, and field-level safety expectations across multilingual teams. Attendees will be introduced to practical approaches organizations use to reinforce training between formal events, including structured refreshers, job aids, peer reinforcement, microlearning, and emerging AI-supported tools. Rather than focusing on a single solution, this session helps participants think more clearly about how reinforcement works, where their current systems may be falling short, and what options may be most useful in their own context. | View | Foundational Level, Workforce Development | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Floridian A | 65 | foundational-level workforce-development | education-session

| 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM | Stop Selling Tree Work: How to Become the Go-To Expert in Your Market |
Ash Connelly, Ash Advisory, LLC In a crowded and competitive market, many tree care companies fall into the trap of competing on price, speed, or availability. The root issue is not their sales technique - it’s their positioning. When companies present themselves as providers of tree work, customers treat them like commodities. But when they position themselves as trusted local experts, they become the first call, not the cheapest option. This session introduces a practical, industry-specific approach to repositioning your company and your sales team as authorities in your market. It explores how individual salespeople can build their own professional identity within the company, creating stronger client relationships, more trust, and increased long-term value. Attendees will learn how to shift conversations away from pricing and toward expertise, how to create a consistent “market expert” presence across their team, and how to build a culture where salespeople take ownership of their clients as if they were running their own business. This is not about scripts or closing techniques. It’s about transforming how your company is perceived and how your team engages with customers at every stage of the relationship. | View | Foundational Level, Sales & Marketing | Education Session | 1 ISA CEUs | Grand E/G | 75 | foundational-level sales-marketing | education-session
